Grinling Gibbons was an incredible wood carver in his day. His attention to detail and craftsmanship was unbeaten, and to this day he is a legend in the carving craft and guiding world, as well as revered by many historians and fans as a trail-blazer and game changer. He was so naturalistic and a master at re-creating nature and all it's intricate poetry. Creating drapes and fluid lines out of the hardest of materials. So confident was he at fooling the eye, he created a naturalistic lace cravat carved out of lime wood and in 1769 Horace Walpole greeted french visitors in it. Nobody noticed that it was wood! On revealing that it was it created an enormous stir across fashion and society... Here it is above, so fantastic. I love this story and his craftsmanship.
